January 15, 2016 Meeting Recap
The NYC Chapter held the January meeting at the Union League Club, a new venue for the Chapter. Founded in 1863 by a group of concerned citizens to help preserve the Union, the Union League Club of New York has built, over ensuing years, a record of distinguished service to our country. Fifteen Presidents, seven Senators, many Congressmen, diplomats, cabinet members, and scores of CEOs of major corporations have been members of the Club during the past hundred and fifty years and have participated in its programs. In addition to the delicious lunched served in the Lincoln Hall, attendees enjoyed the opportunity to browse the historic library adjacent to the luncheon area.
The meeting started with honoring June Pollard, officer at Jamaica Hospital, as the 2015 Security officer of the Year. June was selected for the Security Officer of the Year award for her bravery and skill in defusing an altercation between a man wielding a knife and another man defending himself at the hospital emergency room. She was able to calm the situation, disarming the man with the knife and moving patients and visitors to safety. June Pollard is centered in the photo below together with Craig Schwab (NYC Chairman) to her right Charles Neacy (Security Director at Jamaica Hospital) to her left.

Out guest speaker was Robert J. Sica, Special Agent in Charge of the New York Field Office, U.S. Secret Service. Special Agent Sica shared some very interesting aspects in the recent security detail of the Pope’s visit to New York City in concert with President Obama’s appearance at the United Nations. I believe that those in attendance have a new appreciation of the skills and resources the Secret Service engages in handling high profile security details.
