Two days, over 4800 registered attendees -it was the 26th ASIS NYC Security Conference and Expo that took place April 27-28, 2016 at the Javits Convention Center. The program included a keynote presentation by retired Lieutenant Colonel Robert J . Darling (USM) and the Person of the Year luncheon honoring US Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh C. Johnson.
There were educational sessions, opportunities to get career coaching, to learn about industry trends, to re-examine cyber security issues – to see over 120 exhibits and talk to experts on products and services meeting current physical, technological and personnel security needs.
Moreover, it was an opportunity to network and catch up with people in the security field who you may not have seen in some time.
The conference opened on Wednesday morning with Lieutenant Colonel Robert J. Darling as the Keynote Speaker. Lieutenant Colonel Darling USM (Ret) presented highlights from his experience with President Bush’s airlift evacuation during the 9/11 attacks. He spoke about how these lessons-learned can apply to private sector response to terrorist attacks.
During the NYC Chapter luncheon held on Thursday, April 28th, the current US Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh C. Johnson was recognized as the NYC Chapter Person of the Year for his public service and his previous achievements in the private sector. Secretary Johnson shared insightful stories from his career experiences as a lawyer, Assistant US Attorney in NYC, federal prosecutor, and how this background helped prepare him for the role holds now: head of the Department of Homeland Security.

The winner of this year’s Eugene J. Casey Award for outstanding service was presented to Susan Melnicove VP of Education at ASIS International and to her entire team. ASIS International has partnered with the NYC Chapter during the last several years and Susan and the team have helped add additional education sessions and special programs, enhancing the value to participants in significant and measurable ways.
With the change to a two-day event at ASIS NYC, Susan’s group has coordinated more educational opportunities with a large number of seminar programs and panel presentations, expanding on what our Chapter instituted previously.
